Putting Your House in Order

On Sunday, June 22nd at 11:30am, Rev. Laura Murphy from the Missouri United Methodist Foundation will present Putting Your House in Order, a workshop that lays out how to get your house in order concerning:

  • How to take care of your financial affairs and discern important documents.
  • How to put together a will or trust that reflects your wishes.
  • What you’d like your service of remembrance to include, as well as your burial or cremation wishes.
  • The people, memories, and dates that have been significant in your life.
  • And so much more!

Laura (who is also our guest preacher that Sunday!) will present this information with the heart of a pastor and with training from the Foundation that helps people discern their legacy. This workshop is ideal for people of all ages and stages of life. Having a will or other previous plans discerned is not necessary. This workshop is not soliciting any legal or financial services.

Please register at https://www.graceumc-stl.org/pyhio. Lunch will be provided.

Sunday School & Adult Education

Adult Class: The Lives of Great Christians

Sundays | 9:30 am | May 25-August 24 | Parlor

The followers of Jesus, who came to be called Christians, have practiced and preached their beliefs for centuries. Their actions and achievements, their abilities and energies, have changed the course of history and the nature of belief. Many are well known, but many more are obscure or even nameless. The Lives of Great Christians video series will introduce you to some of Christianity's luminaries. The video lessons are outstanding, the discussion that follows is even better. This class meets in the Parlor. No previous participation is required.

Adult Small Group Book Studies

Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People  by Nadia Bolz-Weber

Sundays | 9:30 am | June 15–July 13 | Wesley Room

Join Amanda Meer & Pastor Winter Hamilton for a 5-week small group, book study Sundays at 9:30am starting on June 15th. In Accidental Saints, New York Times best-selling author Nadia Bolz-Weber invites readers into a surprising encounter with what she calls “a religious but not-so-spiritual life.” Tattooed, angry and profane, this former standup comic turned pastor stubbornly, sometimes hilariously, resists the God she feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely of people—a church-loving agnostic, a drag queen, a felonious Bishop and a gun-toting member of the NRA. This Small Group will meet in the Wesley Room. Please read the first three chapters in preparation for our first session.

Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Disciplines by Lauren Winner

Sundays | 9:30 am | July 20–August 10 | Wesley Room

After her conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity, Lauren Winner found that her life was indelibly marked by the rich traditions and spiritual practices of Judaism. She set out to discover how she could incorporate some of these practices into her new faith. Winner presents eleven Jewish spiritual practices that can transform the way Christians view the world and God. Whether discussing attentive eating, marking the days while grieving, the community that supports a marriage, candle-lighting, or the differences between the Jewish Sabbath and a Sunday spent at the Mudhouse, her favorite coffee shop, Winner writes with appealing honesty and rare insight. This small group will meet in the Wesley Room. Please read introduction and first three chapters for our first session.

Volunteer, Mission, & Social Justice Opportunities

Lift Every Voice: Advocacy Scripts from the Social Justice Team

At least twice a month, Grace UMC's Social Justice Team will be sending out Lift Every Voice emails to make it easier to make your voice heard on important legislative issues. Each email will include a quick, concise explanation of one concerning issue, a link for more detailed information, a list of names and associated emails/phone numbers of appropriate elected officials, and a pre-written script to use or ignore at your discretion. Click here to sign up and access previous issues.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace Bed Build

On Saturday, June 14th at 9am, a group from Grace will meet in the gym at Arlington UMC (3770 McKelvey Road, Bridgeton, MO) to build beds for children in north St. Louis County and St. Louis City who do not have beds of their own. It is an assembly line process, and the leaders of the “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” organization (“SHP”) will teach volunteers everything they need to know (no skills are needed). The workday will end no later than 12pm. Volunteers should be at least 12 years old and, if under 18, accompanied by an adult who will be working with them. We need a minimum of 10 volunteers and not more than 25 for this event. Please click on this link https://forms.gle/PmtuqoKBbXQ86oLB6 to add your name to the Grace list of volunteers (so that we will know how many we have) or call the church office at 314-863-1992. To complete the Sleep in Heavenly Peace volunteer waiver form, please click on the following link: https://x.gldn.io/e/hFfewnxsTRb

Although Grace is donating $2,500 to fund SHP’s building materials and bedding for the ten beds we are building, if you would also like to donate bedding to SHP, they would be happy to receive donations of bedding from the congregation in kid-friendly designs: twin size (but not XL twin) sheet sets (fitted, flat, and pillowcase), comforters, complete sets of comforters and sheet sets (bed in a bag), and standard pillows. Please just drop your donations by the church office.

Mission and Service

God wants us to help one another! The heartbeat of our community is a desire to serve. We are strongly connected to our local neighborhood and believe that serving starts at home. We have active partnerships with University City schools as well as multiple area agencies. Our Tuesday food pantry serves over 5,000 families each year, and both our Missions/Breitmayer and Social Justice teams work hard to build new partnerships and direct our financial support.

We also believe that our service pushes us to support our sisters and brothers across the country and the globe, and we have several events throughout the year that help us build relationships, alleviate food insecurity, and fund emergency relief. As it says in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” So, stay prayerful, and let us know what God wants you to do at Grace!

Missions & Breitmayer Community Ministry

The Missions & Breitmayer Community Ministry Team leads the congregation in providing services and funding to assist those who need help in our local community and beyond. It makes decisions as to special offerings and initiatives with respect to solicitations to the congregation for monetary or in-kind donation assistance, and it decides how funds from both the regular Missions budget (available for international or any needs) and the available Breitmayer funds (focusing on needs in the local community) are to be utilized. The team meets several times each year and, in addition to making funding decisions, plans and implements events and activities that provide opportunities for members of the congregation to get involved in volunteering in the community.

Food Pantry

Our food pantry works to serve the surrounding community with love and support. Each week over 200 hours are dedicated by an average of 25 volunteers to serve up to 100 neighbors. We believe this vital ministry helps us fulfill the mission of Christ. “When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat” (Matthew 25).
Pantry Hours: Tuesday,  9:45 am - 11:45 am

Social Justice

The work of the Social Justice Team is designed to break down societal structures which cause harm to our communities, result in suffering, and necessitate care from groups like Grace UMC’s Missions Team. Inspired by the commitment to “accept the freedom and power God gives us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves,” the Social Justice Team works to confront the root of injustice and suffering in our world and to renounce the wickedness and repent of the sin that is within us as individuals and as a church. The Social Justice Team is committed to breaking down the walls of silence that are erected within the church, often unintentionally, and which preserve the status quo and stifle the voices of the suffering. They lead the congregation in this work by highlighting different sources of injustice faced by the community each month, as well as actions each person can take to participate in the struggle for justice.

Discipleship

Discipleship can mean several things. Our goal is to figure out what it will mean to us and how it will help us grow as beloved of God. We are thrilled to offer two classes (PreK-2nd and 3rd-5th) on Sunday mornings at 9:30am to help our younger church members to learn how to make wise choices, build stronger relationships, and develop a deeper faith. We have also launched a new series called “Short Course,” consisting of 2-3 week classes on a variety of topics, which will meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 am.

Congregational Care

The Congregational Care Team helps our family feel connected. The team conducts visitations of members of our church community who are not in fellowship with us in person, with a focus on those who are homebound.

Worship

The Worship Team is responsible for planning the worship services at 8:30 and 10:30 on Sunday mornings as well as additional holiday services. This team designs a cohesive worship experience on a weekly basis so that all gathered may experience the grace of God and love of community.
