Custodian

This part-time position is for custodial duties at Grace United Methodist Church. The expected schedule will be Sunday-Thursday with an average of 30 hours per week. 


Pay: $16.50 per hour plus paid holiday and overtime. No medical or retirement benefits. For more details, see the Grace UMC Employee Handbook. 


Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • A medical release form is required by all custodial staff before beginning employment
  • A Physician’s release is required after hospitalizations or medical procedures


Other Requirements

  • Reliable transport 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to use the church van for food pantry pick-ups
  • Pass background check


Monday

  • Clean all bathrooms - clean toilet, wash bowls, vanity, mirror, window, and mop floor. Refill towel and toilet paper containers and replace/refill soap.
  • Carry all trash to dumpster in alley and recycling to proper area - main offices, sanctuary, bathrooms, fellowship area, etc.
  • Set up tables/chairs for any events
  • Clean up sanctuary and chapel from Sunday worship - tidy up kids' area, dispose of bulletins, reshelve hymnals


Tuesday (Food Pantry)

  • Drive church van to pick up donations
  • Assist with food pantry by sorting and storing food and working with food pantry volunteers and clients
  • Set up and break down any tables and chairs
  • Remove empty boxes and dispose of trash 
  • On days when United Women in Faith meet, assist with kitchen clean up after luncheon (twice per month)


Wednesday

  • Clean bathrooms in food pantry area
  • Mop food pantry area, fellowship hall, kitchen, 3rd floor (all classrooms, hallway, and choir room)
  • Sweep/mop stairs and wipe banisters
  • Vacuum carpet: sanctuary (main level and pulpit), chapel parlor, main offices, 3rd floor, and Wesley room
  • Clean and store any dishes in parlor and kitchen sink
  • Wipe down counter tops
  • Sweep and wipe down elevator
  • Dust Parlor, Sunday School rooms, chapel pews


Thursday

  • Dust sanctuary (pew, pulpit, and choir area), Wesley room, office, window sills
  • Check (and if necessary) clean and restock bathrooms on all levels
  • Sweep and mop wood floors 
  • Mop nursery and Sunday School classrooms
  • Set up for any weekend events (and clean any tables/chairs as needed)
  • Clean carpet in sanctuary and chapel of any residual grape juice or wax stains
  • Check outside area for cleaning (parking lot, empty outside trashcan, debris)
  • Clean all windows and glass doors


Sunday Morning

  • Unlock the church and set out parking signs by 7:30am
  • Walk perimeter of the building to pick up trash
  • Check bathrooms to make sure they are clean and stocked
  • Lock up church around 1pm


Weekend Duties

For certain events, the custodian may be scheduled to work on Fridays or Saturdays and can select an alternate date off. Work requiring significant overtime pay must first be approved by the Lead Pastor to ensure the safety and care of the worker. The custodian will also be the first called if the alarm system is activated (between 10pm and 5am). The custodian will be paid time and a half if they are required to come into church during those hours to disarm the alarm. 


In addition to weekly duties, the custodial staff will identify any repair needs, potential hazards, or other facility issues to the Building Manager who will share it with the church Trustees.
