Coming Events

Spring Short Courses

On April 28th, May 5th and May 12th, Pastor Dori Hudson will lead a short course on Exodus. Short courses run from 9:30-10:15am on Sunday mornings. They meet either in the food pantry area or fellowship hall. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from an expert!

United Women in Faith Spring Luncheon

Please join the United Women in Faith for the annual spring luncheon on Tuesday, May 14th. The luncheon tea will begin promptly at 12:30pm ($12 donation suggested payable at the door). Following a lovely luncheon tea, we will be entertained by Bev Schuetz, who is a popular and dynamic speaker who has created History Talks, a series of live presentations. She is known for her unique topics, delightful presentations and thoroughly researched programs. Our program will be The Amusing History of Kitchens, Cutlery, and Manners. Examine the unique origins of items we use every day on our tables and in our kitchens. You will be amused by the hilarious etiquette and manners promoted by the well-bred throughout the ages. Would you believe the reason table knives weren't sharpened was to discourage guests from picking their teeth with their knives; that before thermometers, heat was measured by pain; and that currently China can't manufacture enough wooden chopsticks for their market so they buy them from the USA? You'll be intrigued by this unusual, funny and fascinating history of the practical things we never question. Please invite your friends! Sign up at https://forms.gle/zuyqRTdg9DH84QVU7

The Junktique

Grace will hold the annual Junktique (largest rummage sale around!) on Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th. A big shout out to those who recently helped pack up two different apartments for our beloved Maxine Blaine and got the treasure hunt going. As always, we prefer you keep your donations until set up day on Sunday, August 4th. Many hands make this a project that serves the community, builds our church relationships, and helps us keep the clutter out of our homes. As we get nearer, we will send out information about arranging pick-ups and getting involved.

As a side note, we have spearheaded this event for over 10 years and have decided this is our last Junktique as chairs. We would love to involve anyone who would like to be trained to take over this tradition of more than 50 years! Thanking you in advance for your support and involvement! Junktique Chairs: Becky Ballard, Mary Becker, Sandy Marsh & Susan Shelton

NAMI Walks Fundraiser

Each year, Grace member Jimmy Pace leads a NAMIWalks team to raise awareness and funds for people with mental illness. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides educational tools related to mental health. This year's NAMIWalks will take place on Saturday, May 11th from 9am to 12pm, starting at the Tremayne Shelter in Creve Coeur Park (13725 Marine Ave, 63146). To participate, join Jimmy's Team or make a donation to help Jimmy reach his $25,000 fundraising goal.

Support LuMin on Give STL Day

May 9th is Give STL Day! You're invited to give to our ecumenical college ministry, LuMin, to help them reach their $5,000 goal and support their work in welcoming, empowering, supporting, and sending young adults into the world with a deeper understanding of their faith journey. Early giving begins April 24th. More information, as well as a donation page, is found at: www.givestlday.org/organization/lumin

Provide Dinner for Our LuMin College Students!

LuMin, our campus ministry partner, hosts weekly dinners for 10-15 students on Sundays at 6:30pm, and we need your help with providing meals! A meal includes an entrée (meat & vegetarian options), a salad, bread, and dessert. You're also welcome to bring fresh fruit and beverages if you have the capacity for that. Current known among students allergies are garlic, beef, tree nuts and peanuts. It is helpful if you share a list of ingredients for the entrée/salad/dessert. We ask that the food arrives no later than 6pm. An alternative would be to arrive earlier and prepare food on site. We also welcome you to join us for dinner & worship. We anticipate students arriving between 6:30-6:45pm (college culture is not real life culture, especially being on time). If interested, you can sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508084FA5A72AA3FC1-46644846-lumin#/

Mission and Service

God wants us to help one another! The heartbeat of our community is a desire to serve. We are strongly connected to our local neighborhood and believe that serving starts at home. We have active partnerships with University City schools as well as multiple area agencies. Our Tuesday food pantry serves over 5,000 families each year, and both our Missions/Breitmayer and Social Justice teams work hard to build new partnerships and direct our financial support.

We also believe that our service pushes us to support our sisters and brothers across the country and the globe, and we have several events throughout the year that help us build relationships, alleviate food insecurity, and fund emergency relief. As it says in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” So, stay prayerful, and let us know what God wants you to do at Grace!

Missions & Breitmayer Community Ministry

The Missions & Breitmayer Community Ministry Team leads the congregation in providing services and funding to assist those who need help in our local community and beyond. It makes decisions as to special offerings and initiatives with respect to solicitations to the congregation for monetary or in-kind donation assistance, and it decides how funds from both the regular Missions budget (available for international or any needs) and the available Breitmayer funds (focusing on needs in the local community) are to be utilized. The team meets several times each year and, in addition to making funding decisions, plans and implements events and activities that provide opportunities for members of the congregation to get involved in volunteering in the community.

Food Pantry

Our food pantry works to serve the surrounding community with love and support. Each week over 200 hours are dedicated by an average of 25 volunteers to serve up to 100 neighbors. We believe this vital ministry helps us fulfill the mission of Christ. “When I was hungry, you gave me something to eat” (Matthew 25).
Pantry Hours: Tuesday,  9:45 am - 11:45 am

Social Justice

The work of the Social Justice Team is designed to break down societal structures which cause harm to our communities, result in suffering, and necessitate care from groups like Grace UMC’s Missions Team. Inspired by the commitment to “accept the freedom and power God gives us to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves,” the Social Justice Team works to confront the root of injustice and suffering in our world and to renounce the wickedness and repent of the sin that is within us as individuals and as a church. The Social Justice Team is committed to breaking down the walls of silence that are erected within the church, often unintentionally, and which preserve the status quo and stifle the voices of the suffering. They lead the congregation in this work by highlighting different sources of injustice faced by the community each month, as well as actions each person can take to participate in the struggle for justice.

Discipleship

Discipleship can mean several things. Our goal is to figure out what it will mean to us and how it will help us grow as beloved of God. We are thrilled to offer two classes (PreK-2nd and 3rd-5th) on Sunday mornings at 9:30am to help our younger church members to learn how to make wise choices, build stronger relationships, and develop a deeper faith. We have also launched a new series called “Short Course,” consisting of 2-3 week classes on a variety of topics, which will meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 am.

Congregational Care

The Congregational Care Team helps our family feel connected. The team conducts visitations of members of our church community who are not in fellowship with us in person, with a focus on those who are homebound.

Worship

The Worship Team is responsible for planning the worship services at 8:30 and 10:30 on Sunday mornings as well as additional holiday services. This team designs a cohesive worship experience on a weekly basis so that all gathered may experience the grace of God and love of community.
